South Maui Volunteers

Jacob's Ring

Jacob & Amanda, and Laura are all new South Maui Volunteers..all in their 20’s and very good workers. Jacob and Amanda are engaged. They got matching engagement rings on Maui... beautiful rings made from coconut wood and not metallic. Jacob thought he lost his ring in a section of sand where he was working that was about 10x 10 feet square. They had really moved a lot of sand and had also dug out 6 post holes that day. He did not notice the missing ring until he had left the area for the day. He was devastated and Amanda tried to be brave and feign compassion. They all searched for some time sifting through the sand but eventually gave up when they realized the impossibility of the situation. They went out into the ocean and you could see the couple hugging and consoling one another.

Was it a bad sign? Should they really get married? Was there a lesson for them in this? Perhaps it was a mistake to work so hard for this group.

Our own John T. was working in the area and continued to do his job of filling the post holes after the posts were placed. He took off his gloves and used his bare hands to fill in the sand to make sure he felt for the ring. He never really said anything about looking for it, just went about his job, but he kept a lookout. We were all keeping an eye out for the ring, actually. Well, John found it. He caught Laura's attention and she ran up and took the ring then jumped into the ocean to let Jacob and Amanda know. Lot’s of tears and hugs. They finally came out of the ocean and headed for John. It was quite a scene and they were all very demonstrative and emotional. Like John said- “You don’t find it unless you look.” He went on to say to them that “it was just not fair that you put in all of this volunteer time and then have this happen.”
John is our hero for this week.

ADA Ramp Construction Has Begun!

On Monday, March 26, we had a great group who worked to prepare the site for the ADA ramp.   On Tuesday and Wednesday, a group of hearty volunteers worked from 7am until about noon and by Wednesday there were over 30 of the giant posts in the ground!  These posts provide the framework for the handrails and ramp itself.   It looks like a massive project with all the bracing, but it will size down a bit once the posts are cut to size after the handrails are completed.  The plan right now is for the workdays to go from Mondays through Fridays until done.

March 5 at Kamaole II

The group, led by Jeff and Cindy Kern, worked at Kamaole Beach Park II on March 5.  There were 15 volunteers and a lot of projects were completed.
The Hawaii Tourism Authority sent word that our application was successful and we will recieve a grant to build two dune walkovers by March 2013 through the HTA Natural Resources Program.   The terms of the grant include matching the grant award of $25,000 with volunteer hours cash... so we are not only going to be busy with the construction of the two ramps (one ADA-compliant for handicapped and one for the ATV's the police and lifeguards use) but we will also need to raise funds!   Please consider buying a custom brick or making a contribution to Tri-Isle RC&D... our fiscal sponsor.  Check out the main website home page for links to the bricks and to Tri Isle.  Mahalo!

March 5 Workday

It was a smaller volunteer group than what we've been seeing lately, for sure, but boy did we get a lot done!  In the photo, this last load of pluchea was uprooted near the Kamaole Point seabird nesting site.  We also re-strung the rope borders to help people know where they should walk and where not.... it would seem that we are ready to see the first of the feathered flock back in mid to late March!
NOTE to put on your calendar... April 23 will be adult seabird banding night.  The birds come in after dark and the DLNR biologists will be trying to capture as many as possible to either band them or to read their bands.  This information helps identify ages, stages, and life patterns of the  'ua'u kani (Wedge tailed Shearwater).

You can see Dave and Donna out every single day along South Kihei Road and in the parks picking up rubbish and cigarette butts.  Dave likes to say that he looks forward to "Bonus Day".  When asked when that is he says he never knows for sure but it's the day that he gets to 'keep' whatever it is he picks up!  He has quite the sense of humor!

Next week, we'll be working at Kamaole Beach Park II under the direction of Cindy and Jeff.  On the 19th, we'll be preparing for the construction of the ADA ramp at Kamaole III.

The ADA sidewalk was installed by the County Parks Department this past week.  Our group raked the sides and now we are prepared to move forward with the construction of the actual ADA dune walkover that will attach to this sidewalk.

We are hoping for a grant, but we need additional funding!  Please consider donating or buying a personalized brick to help support this important project!   For a brick order form, check on the South Maui Volunteers website home page and follow the link.

Big Group at Charley Young on February 20

What a group we had on Monday the 20th... We filled the truck with weeds, invasive plants, and even some regular tree trimmings.  We had 28 hard-working volunteers show up and boy did we get a lot done!  It's getting harder and harder to figure out where we can work because everything is looking so great all along the south coast. Mahalo to all of our volunteers... whether you can come one week or every week or even if you must 'root' for us from afar, you make a huge difference!

Next week, we'll be at Kamaole Beach Park 3 preparing for the seabirds' return in mid-March.  Every year, the Wedge-tailed Shearwater Seabirds ('U 'a ukani) come to build tunnels or burrows in the ground to nest in for their single chicks.  The birds are not endangered, but they are Federally protected.
